Course Syllabus 

The focus will be on basic podiatry principles that will include:
-How to better understand what we see.
-How to obtain the most informative radiographs.
-How to interpret radiographic information from the perspective of a farrier and a veterinarian. (Case studies)
-How to correlate soft tissue parameter information with external landmarks, a valuable blueprint for farriers. Learning to visualize the basic radiographic information via the message of the growth patterns and other unique external features is a vital step to getting into the zone of mechanics.
-How to better understand the mechanical formula and how it can change the way you plan your work and work the plan.


-How to plan the mechanical strategy to enhance:
*Much needed foot mass (the horse that grows nothing from one shoeing to the next)
*Joint symmetry vs. medial lateral palmar rim imbalance
*Heel mass
*Mass over balance
-Selecting the optimum performance shoe to meet the required mechanical benefits
-How to use radiographs to guide the precision trim
-How to rocker shoes for various levels of mechanics (flat, wedges, full rockers and rails).  When, Why, and How.
-How to trim the widest part of the frog without lowering PA
-Enhancing mechanics with composites, from the performance shoe to hospital plates
-How to optimize placement and style of shoe attachment for a variety of circumstances
-Common misconceptions concerning rocker shoes


-The sequence of events from the mildest form of this syndrome to the highest level of tissue damage
-Damage assessment tools for the acute case
1. Gross exam
2. Radiographs
3. Venograms (interpretation, case study examples)
4. Clinical response
-When, why, and how to formulate the most efficient vascular reperfusion protocol using shear mechanics
-How to monitor the response and efficiency of chosen treatment
-When to make surgical decisions (ddft)
-Pros and cons of the ddft
-Benefits of drastically reducing ddft tension on failing laminae and sole corium compression
-How to interpret the chronic case venogram relative to history.  What are the options and prognosis for a quality life?

A variety of cadaver feet with pathological conditions will allow students to be more focused on the trim, application, and placement of mechanical shoes.
-Mapping the foot, radiographic blueprint studies
-Identifying radiographic landmarks
-Trimming the foot to optimize the mechanical goals
-Altering the shoe of choice (flats, full rockers, rails)
-Precision placement and attachment (hook nail technique vs straight nail), composites, cast and or combination
-What is your diagnosis, options, selected treatment plan and proposed outcome.

-Cadaver feet will be available for students that desire more time trimming, rockering shoes and checking their plan with x-rays.  
-How to apply a standing leg cast
-Making a foot mold
-Aluminum welding and forging
-Practicing the hook nail technique
-Live horses will be available for veterinarians to perform venograms 
-Identifying radiographic landmarks 
-Trimming the foot to optimize the mechanical goals 
-Altering the shoe of choice (flats, full rockers, rails)
-Precision placement and attachment (hook nail technique vs straight nail), composites, cast and or combination
Each parameter study, proposed protocol trim, shoe choice, shape and attachment will be evaluated for each student. 
-What is your diagnosis, options, selected treatment plan and proposed outcome. 

When veterinarians and farriers learn together they enhance their effectiveness when working together.

Continuing Education:
This program 62-30245 has been submitted and is pending approval by the AAVSB RACE to offer a total of 35.00 CE Credits (35.00 max) being available to any one veterinarian: and/or 35.00 Veterinary Technician CE Credits (35.00 max). This RACE approval is for the subject matter categories of:
