The IBEX Babi-Cuff horseshoes are a unique design and offers universal applicatiions. They are designed to help correct flexural deformitites in foals and young horses. Contracted or collapsed tendons, valgus/varus deviations, and medial/lateral hoof growth deformities.

The shoe is basically a cuff with 4 extensions molded upon a small egg bar, which provides stability and support and allows adjustment. Simply trim and rasp or cut the extensions that are not required. The shoes are fitted with either polyurethane, acrylic, or epoxy adhesives, whichever is the preference of the farrier or vet.

Size 1 measures 2 1/4" heel to toe and 1 3/4" wide.

Size 2 measures 3" heel to toe and 2 1/4" wide.

Size 3 measures 3 3/4" heel to toe and 2 3/4" wide.

Size 4 measures 4 1/4" heel to toe and 3 1/4" wide.

Babi-Cuff Instructions

The Babi-Cuff is a corrective shoe that has been designed to be universal in its application, featuring toe-heel-lateral-medial extensions.

The particular extensions that are NOT REQUIRED are simply cut off with nippers or a bandsaw.  This means the shoes are advantageous in that:

  • they are universal.
  • they are not handed.

Select the size of the shoe required.

Check the shoe on the foot, it may need to be widened or narrowed.

The shoes have up to 1/4" of adjustment either way.

Remove the extensions that are NOT REQUIRED.  Now it is easier to shape.

Simply hammer the shoe over the point of the anvil as with a normal bar shoe.

Don't be afraid to hit it, the plastic is very tough.

Heat the cuff with a hot air gun, this will allow the plastic to become very soft and flexible.

While warm, place the shoe on the foot, push the shoe back sufficiently so as to stretch the rim of the cuff and achieve an accurate form of cuff to hoof.

Another simpler method if you don't have a heat gun, is to slice the cuff into separate petals or tabs.

The foot should be prepared by rasping lightly or sanding, to key the surface of the hoof and the inside of the cuff should be cleaned with alcohol, and then dried with a heat gun.

Use an adhesive that will fill gaps and voids.  This can be acrylic or a polyurethane.

If you are using a polyurethane then you must work quite quickly as you have only about a minute maximum before the adhesive will cure.  Do not put any load on the shoe for about 4-5 minutes.

If you use an acrylic, it has a longer "open" time (normally sets in 4-6 minutes) then you may want to speed the job up with a bit of heat.

IMPORTANT

The extensions included on these shoes are on the generous side.  It is not intended that they are always fitted as such.  In some cirmcumstances they may be larger than required, thereby creating excessive leverage and too much pressure on the joint.

They are also more predisposed to being stood on by the mare (lateral) and by the foal itself (medial).

It is the responsibility of the vet or farrier to assess and decide just how much support is required, then to trim to suit.

Remember that the feet of a foal are increasing in diameter by about 1mm per week.

We recommend that the shoes and their fit be checked regularly and that on no account should be left on for more than 21 days.
